Thomas Thornycroft Collection

Thomas Thornycroft (1815-1885) was an English sculptor and artist. He was born in London, the son of a master builder. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and received his first major commission in 1843 for a statue of Queen Victoria. This led to further commissions from the royal family and other prominent figures, including statues of Prince Albert, Lord Nelson, and Sir Walter Scott. His most famous works include The Barge of State (1850), which is now located on the Thames Embankment in London; The Angel of Peace (1856); and The Amazon (1860). Thornycroft also created several war memorials after World War I, including those at Hyde Park Corner and Whitehall. His work is renowned for its realism and attention to detail, as well as its ability to capture movement in stone or bronze sculptures.
