James Burrell Smith Collection

James Burrell Smith is an American artist, sculptor, and educator. He was born in Philadelphia in 1949 and graduated from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Smith has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He is known for his large-scale sculptures that are often inspired by nature and African American culture. His sculptures have been featured in public spaces around the world, including a bronze sculpture entitled “The Journey” which stands outside the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C. Smith has also taught art classes at several universities throughout his career, including Rutgers University and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work continues to inspire generations of young artists today with its powerful message about identity and resilience.
