Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys Collection

Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys (1829-1904) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter and draughtsman. He was born in Norwich, England, the son of a clergyman. His early works were influenced by his father's interest in medievalism and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Sandys studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1845 to 1848, where he was taught by Thomas Seddon and Edward Calvert. He then traveled to Italy and Spain for further study before returning to London in 1851. In London, he became a successful portrait painter, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1852 onwards. He also painted religious subjects, genre scenes of everyday life as well as mythological scenes inspired by classical literature such as Ovid's Metamorphoses. His works are characterized by their rich colors and strong sense of detail which reflect his admiration for the art of Northern Europe during this period.
