Henry Reuterdahl Collection

Henry Reuterdahl (1871-1925) was a Swedish-American painter, sculptor, and muralist. He is best known for his maritime paintings and sculptures of naval battles. His works often depicted the heroic deeds of sailors during World War I. Reuterdahl studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm before emigrating to the United States in 1892. He quickly gained recognition for his work and was commissioned to paint murals for several public buildings including the U.S. Capitol Building, the Minnesota State Capitol, and many other locations throughout America. In addition to painting murals, he also created sculptures such as The Battle of Lake Erie Monument in Ohio and The Spirit of American Youth Memorial in New York City's Central Park. Reuterdahl's works are now housed in numerous museums around the world including The National Museum of American History and The Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery among others.
