Crispin I de Passe Collection

Crispin I de Passe (1565-1637) was a Dutch engraver and publisher who worked in the Netherlands and England. He is best known for his engravings of portraits, maps, and other illustrations. He was born in Cologne, Germany to a family of printers, and he moved to the Netherlands when he was young. In 1583 he became an apprentice to the famous engraver Hendrik Goltzius in Haarlem. After completing his apprenticeship, Crispin moved to England where he established himself as a successful engraver and publisher. His works were highly sought after by collectors due to their high quality and detail. Crispin's most famous works include portraits of Queen Elizabeth I, King James I, Sir Walter Raleigh, William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon and many others. He also engraved numerous maps for books such as Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). Crispin's work had an immense influence on later generations of artists including Rembrandt van Rijn who studied under him for two years in 1626-27.
