Boat House, Birkenhead Park DP175237

Birkenhead Park, Park Drive, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside. Designed by Joseph Paxton, Edward Kemp and architects Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson, opened 5th April 1847, responding to declining health conditions during the Industrial Revolution in the C19. Unique as it was the first park to be created through an act of Parliament and using public funds. It was the inspiration for New York's Central Park. Roman Boat House, view from south east

The Great Derby Race for 1851 Featured Joseph Paxton Print

The Great Derby Race for 1851

The Great Derby Race for Eighteen Hundred and Fifty-One. Mr Punch is out front, followed by Joseph Paxton, and then various jockeys from all nations riding a variety of animals - a bull, an elephant, a pig, a camel. The whole thing seems to be taking place in front of the Crystal Palace, the site of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, which opened in 1851. Date: 1851
