EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Glimpse into the Prehistoric Past: Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins' Crystal Palace Dinosaur Models (1854)" This evocative photograph captures the awe-inspiring Crystal Palace Dinosaur Models, created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins in collaboration with Joseph Paxton and Richard Owen. Installed in Crystal Palace Park in 1854, these models marked the world's first dinosaur park. Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1894) was a British sculptor who dedicated himself to creating lifelike replicas of various animals, including dinosaurs. He worked closely with renowned botanist and architect Joseph Paxton and renowned paleontologist Richard Owen to bring these extinct creatures to life. The models on display in this photograph represent various groups of ancient reptiles, including Lacertilia (lizards), Archosauria (crocodiles and their descendants), Diapsida (animals with two openings in the skull), Lepidosauria (scaled reptiles), Dinosauria (terrestrial reptiles), and Lepidosaur (scaled reptiles with a second row of smaller scales). The models, which span the period from 1804 to 1892, showcase the remarkable progress in understanding the prehistoric world during the 19th century. Some of the models depicted include Iguanodon, Hylaeosaurus, and the mighty Diplodocus. This photograph, taken by Derek Adams, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was just beginning to grasp the existence and diversity of these incredible creatures. The Crystal Palace Dinosaur Models remain an enduring testament to the ingenuity and curiosity of the human spirit.
