John Rogers Herbert (1810-1890) was a British painter and draughtsman who specialized in historical and biblical scenes. He was born in London, the son of a successful merchant, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1829 to 1835. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1836 until his death in 1890. His work is characterized by its attention to detail and accuracy of composition. His most famous works include The Death of Chatterton (1856), The Meeting of Wellington and Blucher after the Battle of Waterloo (1859), and Queen Victoria's Visit to Dublin (1849). Herbert's paintings were popular with both public audiences as well as members of the royal family, who purchased several works for their private collections. He was awarded medals by both the Royal Academy and Paris Salon for his work throughout his career, cementing him as one of Britain's most celebrated painters during this period.
