William Thomas Fry Collection

William Thomas Fry (1810-1864) was an American composer and music educator who was born in Philadelphia. He studied music under the tutelage of his father, William Fry Sr., a prominent organist and composer. He is best known for his compositions for piano, including "The Last Rose of Summer" and "The Battle of Prague". He also wrote several operas, including "The Corsair" and "Oberon". In addition to composing, he taught at the Philadelphia Academy of Music from 1835 until his death in 1864. His students included Stephen Foster, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, John Knowles Paine, and Edward MacDowell. Fry's influence on American music remains strong today as many of his works are still performed regularly around the world.
