Dosso Dossi Collection

Dosso Dossi (1490-1542) was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance, active mainly in Ferrara and Mantua. He was born Giovanni di Niccolò de Lutero in Ferrara, and is also known as Dosso Ferrarese or Il Dosso. His style was influenced by Giorgione, Titian and Raphael. He painted religious subjects as well as mythological scenes, portraits and landscapes. His works are characterized by their rich colors, strong chiaroscuro effects and dramatic compositions. He also worked with his brother Battista Dossi on a number of projects for the court of Duke Alfonso I d'Este in Ferrara. In addition to painting he also designed tapestries for the court which were used to decorate its palaces. Dosso Dossi's work has been highly praised over the centuries for its beauty and technical skill; it remains influential today among modern artists who admire his use of color and composition to create powerful images that evoke emotion from viewers.
