Daniel Defoe was an English writer, journalist, and pamphleteer who is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. He was born in London in 1660 and lived through the reigns of five British monarchs. He wrote over 500 books, pamphlets, and journals on a variety of topics including politics, religion, crime, economics and society. Defoe's work often focused on the plight of the lower classes during his lifetime. His most famous work is Robinson Crusoe which tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked on an island and must survive alone for 28 years before being rescued. The novel has been adapted into numerous films and television shows over the years. Defoe's other works include Moll Flanders (1722) which follows a woman's life as she navigates her way through poverty-stricken London; A Journal of the Plague Year (1722) which chronicles events during London's Great Plague; Roxana (1724), a novel about an ambitious woman; A Tour Through England & Wales (1724-26), a travelogue; The Political History of the Devil (1726); The Complete English Tradesman (1727); among many others.
