Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp-Villon was a French sculptor and painter. He was born in 1876, the younger brother of Marcel Duchamp. His work is associated with Cubism and Fauvism, and he is best known for his sculptures of horses. He also created a number of paintings, drawings, prints and collages. In 1914 he enlisted in the French army but was discharged due to illness two years later. After World War I he returned to sculpture and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1921. His later works were more abstract than his earlier ones, often featuring geometric shapes or abstracted figures. He died in 1918 from tuberculosis at the age of 42, leaving behind a legacy as one of France's most important early modernist sculptors.
