Fred Holland Day Collection

Fred Holland Day (1864-1933) was an American photographer, publisher, and art dealer. He is best known for his photographs of the New England countryside and his pioneering work in promoting photography as an art form. He was born in Massachusetts and studied at Harvard University before becoming a professional photographer. His early photographs were published in magazines such as The Photographic Times and Camera Notes. In 1897 he founded the publishing firm Copeland & Day which specialized in photogravures of his own work as well as those of other photographers. He also opened a gallery to exhibit photography, making him one of the first to do so. His influence on the development of photography is widely recognized today; he helped to establish it as an accepted form of fine art and encouraged its use for commercial purposes such as advertising.
