Charles Nicolas Cochin Collection

Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790) was a French engraver, designer, and art theorist. He was born in Paris and trained as an engraver under his father. He became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1740 and later served as its director from 1771 to 1790. Cochin was known for his detailed engravings of historical monuments, landscapes, portraits, and religious works. His designs were also used to illustrate books such as Voltaire's “Lettres Philosophiques” (1734). He wrote several books on art theory including “Essai sur les principes des beaux arts” (1755) which argued for the importance of line over color in painting. Cochin had a major influence on the development of French neoclassicism during the 18th century and is remembered today as one of France's most important artists from that period.
