EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail of the Dance of Death fresco, dating all the way back to 1475. Located inside the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rocks in Beram, Istria, Croatia, this remarkable artwork is a true gem of European history and artistry. The intricate detailing and ornate design showcased in this photograph are truly awe-inspiring. The skeleton figures depicted in vibrant colors against a backdrop of rich hues create an eerie yet fascinating atmosphere within the chapel's interior. Each figure holds a scythe, symbolizing death's inevitable presence. As you immerse yourself in this image, you can't help but feel transported back to medieval times when such macabre depictions were common in Catholicism-inspired art. The male and female likenesses arranged in rows add depth and complexity to this hauntingly beautiful painting. With no people present, allowing us to fully appreciate every brushstroke and color choice made by its creator, it becomes evident why this site has become both a tourist destination and a place of worship for Roman Catholics alike. Stuart Black skillfully captured not only the essence but also the historical significance behind this masterpiece with his photography skills. This print serves as a window into another time - an invitation for us to explore Europe's artistic heritage while contemplating life's impermanence through dance with death itself.
