EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photograph, Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Stan Cullis is seen making his way onto the Old Gold and Black pitch one last time, in the 1964-65 season. Cullis, who was born in Wolverhampton in 1919, began his professional career with the Wolves in 1938, going on to make over 300 appearances for the club as a cultured centre-half and captaining England in the process. His leadership and skill on the field helped Wolves to win the League Championship in the 1949-50 season, and he went on to manage the side during their European glory days in the 1950s. Wolves became the first British team to win the European Cup Winners' Cup, in 1960, and Cullis's tactical acumen and inspiring presence were instrumental in their success. Despite his achievements, Cullis's later years were marred by ill health. He had been living at a nursing home in Worcestershire for some time before his death on 28th February 2001, at the age of 81. This photograph, taken during his final appearance for the club he loved, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of a true Wolves great.
