EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the essence of rural bliss, this enchanting print takes us back to a picturesque spring day in May 1939 at Graffham, West Sussex. Nestled amidst an idyllic orchard bursting with blossoming fruit trees, seven open-sided chicken coops stand proudly as guardians of nature's delicate harmony. The scene is alive with the joyful energy of newly hatched chicks, eagerly exploring their surroundings and scratching around in the lush green grass nearby. The Garland Collection preserves this timeless snapshot of life on a West Sussex farm, where free-range chickens roam freely amidst nature's bountiful beauty. This image transports us to a simpler time when agriculture flourished under clear blue skies and fragrant blooms filled the air. As we gaze upon this charming tableau, we are reminded of the importance placed on sustainable farming practices even then - hen houses and pens thoughtfully designed to provide shelter while allowing these feathered inhabitants ample freedom to express their natural instincts. This photograph from West Sussex County Council's archives serves as a gentle reminder that our connection with nature has always been vital for both our well-being and that of our environment.
