EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "The Pilgrim Fathers boarding the Mayflower" we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in history. The image depicts a group of brave individuals, known as the Pilgrim Fathers, embarking on their voyage to America aboard the legendary ship, Mayflower. Painted by Bernard Gribble, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of their journey and symbolizes the profound impact they would have on shaping a new nation. The Pilgrim Fathers were driven by unwavering faith and an unyielding desire for religious freedom. Fleeing persecution and intolerance in England during the early 17th century, these courageous souls sought solace across the vast Atlantic Ocean. They were primarily Christian separatists who believed in practicing their faith independently from state-controlled churches. This poignant image evokes emotions of hope, determination, and resilience as these pioneers set sail towards an unknown future. It serves as a reminder of both colonialism's complex legacy and humanity's relentless pursuit for liberty. As we reflect upon this historical moment captured by Archive from Universal Images Group (UIG), it is important to acknowledge that colonization was not without its flaws or controversies. However, focusing solely on those aspects would overlook the profound significance of religious freedom that motivated these pilgrims to undertake such a perilous journey. Ultimately, this print invites us to appreciate our shared heritage while also prompting us to contemplate how far we have come since those early days of colonisation – reminding us never to take
