EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the 15th century, immersing us in a moment of medical examination. The image depicts a physician diligently examining a sample of urine from a patient lying in bed. The woodcut, originally featured in "Le livre de la propriete des choses" (On the Properties of Things), written by Bartholomew Glanville and translated by Jean Corbechon, offers us an intriguing glimpse into the history of healthcare and medicine. The doctor's focused expression reveals his dedication to understanding the patient's illness through this ancient diagnostic method. Holding the small vial containing the precious liquid, he carefully analyzes its properties for any signs or clues that might shed light on their condition. This scene is captured within the confines of what appears to be a studio setting, emphasizing both its artistic nature and scientific significance. The woodcut technique used here adds depth and texture to this historical illustration. Its intricate details bring life to every aspect - from the delicate folds of fabric on the patient's bed to each line etched onto their faces. As we observe this single object frozen in time, we are reminded not only of how far medical science has progressed but also of our timeless quest for knowledge and understanding when it comes to matters of health.
