EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the profound moment of "The Raising of Lazarus" by Jesus, beautifully depicted by Flemish artist Albert van Ouwater in the 15th century. Set in a family side chapel, the scene is filled with an atmosphere of anticipation and awe. A crowd gathers outside, peering through a gate to witness this miraculous event unfold. In the center foreground, Lazarus emerges from his tomb after four days, casting off his shroud as he rises. The power and healing abilities of Jesus are evident as he stands beside Lazarus, serving as both healer and savior. On the right side of the image, a man holds a scarf to his nose, perhaps overwhelmed by the scent of decay that accompanies Lazarus' resurrection. Van Ouwater's attention to detail and skillful use of light bring this religious narrative to life. The composition draws our eyes towards Lazarus' suspended animation while emphasizing the significance of faith and belief in Christian religion. "The Raising of Lazarus" serves as a powerful reminder that death can be conquered through divine intervention. This artwork not only showcases Van Ouwater's artistic talent but also invites viewers to reflect on themes such as mortality, resurrection, and the enduring power of faith throughout history.
