EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Gentile da Foligno, a renowned medical authority of his time, deeply engrossed in examining a sample of urine. Known for his extensive commentaries on earlier medical authorities and original works, Gentile's expertise in the field of medicine was highly regarded. In fact, he even produced a Consilium on the Black Death of 1348 at the request of Perugia's city and university. The woodcut image is taken from Hartmann Schedel's Liber chronicarum mundi (Nuremberg Chronicle) published in Nuremberg in 1493. It beautifully portrays Gentile's dedication to understanding diseases and finding solutions to combat them. Uroscopy, the practice of analyzing urine samples for diagnostic purposes, was an important aspect of medieval medicine. This particular scene showcases Gentile's commitment to unraveling the mysteries hidden within bodily fluids as he seeks answers about health and disease. The historical significance behind this image lies not only in its depiction of Gentile da Foligno but also in its representation of medical practices during that era. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, scholars like Gentile were tirelessly working towards advancing our understanding of human health. This print from Universal Images Group (UIG) offers us a glimpse into the past and invites us to appreciate the contributions made by individuals like Gentile da Foligno who dedicated their lives to improving healthcare knowledge and combating epidemics such as the Black Death.
