EDITORS COMMENTS
Ploughing in Paddock Wood, Kent in 1937 captures a timeless scene of English rural life during the interwar period. This print showcases the enduring bond between man and beast as a shire horse, also known as a carthorse, diligently ploughs through the fertile fields of Kent. The image transports us back to an era when agriculture was at the heart of British industry. The photograph beautifully depicts the artistry involved in traditional farming methods, with each furrow meticulously carved into the earth by hand. The sheer strength and grace of these magnificent horses is evident as they effortlessly navigate their way across the landscape. It serves as a poignant reminder of how vital these noble creatures were to sustaining agricultural practices before mechanization took over. This snapshot from the 1930s not only offers us a glimpse into our agrarian past but also symbolizes resilience and hard work amidst challenging times. As we admire this piece from Between The Wars' collection, we are reminded that even during periods marked by economic uncertainty and social upheaval, communities like Paddock Wood relied on their strong agricultural roots to persevere.
