EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph from The Northcliffe Collection, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is seen making history at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the Calcutta Cup clash between Scotland and England in 1976. The Five Nations Championship match, a significant annual rugby union tournament between the Home Nations, was in full swing, and the Queen's visit added an extra layer of excitement to the already intense rivalry between the two teams. As the teams lined up for the pre-match formalities, the Queen, dressed elegantly in a coat and hat, approached the England team, led by their captain Bill Beaumont. With a warm and friendly smile, she extended her hand to shake Beaumont's, marking a memorable moment in the annals of rugby history. The Calcutta Cup, a symbol of the annual competition between England and Scotland, is visible in the background, adding to the significance of the occasion. The photograph, taken from The Northcliffe Collection, is a testament to the rich heritage of rugby union in the United Kingdom and the special role the monarchy plays in celebrating its culture and traditions.
