EDITORS COMMENTS
Manor Class 4-6-0 No. 7820 Dinmore Manor gracefully pulls into Shrewsbury Station in 1964, its polished brass fittings and gleaming black liveried body reflecting the sun's rays. The Manor Class locomotives, designed by Charles Collett for the Great Western Railway (GWR) in the late 1930s, were an improvement on their previous Churchward 4-6-0 designs, featuring a more powerful firebox and a larger boiler. No. 7820, named after Dinmore Manor in Gloucestershire, was one of the last 10 locomotives built in this class. As the British railway network began to electrify and dieselize in the 1960s, steam locomotives like No. 7820 became a relic of a bygone era. The steam age was coming to an end, but for those fortunate enough to witness it, the sight of a steam locomotive in action was a breathtaking experience. The sound of the hissing steam, the sight of the pistons pumping, and the feeling of power as the train pulled away were all part of the magic of steam travel. This photograph captures a moment in time, a snapshot of history, as Manor Class 4-6-0 No. 7820 makes its way into Shrewsbury Station. It is a reminder of the romance and nostalgia that surrounds the age of steam, an era that continues to captivate and inspire railway enthusiasts around the world.
