EDITORS COMMENTS
No. 6006 King George I, a majestic 4-6-0 King Class locomotive, proudly stands at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (GWR). Built in 1928, this historic steam engine is a testament to the engineering prowess of its time. The King Class locomotives, also known as the Grange Class, were designed by George Churchward, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR, and were named after the monarchs of England and Scotland. No. 6006, named after King George I, was one of the last 10 locomotives of the class to be built. Its impressive size and powerful presence are evident in this photograph, with its large boiler and tall funnel dominating the scene. The engine's intricate details, from the embossed nameplates to the ornate brass fittings, are a feast for the eyes. The King Class locomotives were known for their efficiency and power, and No. 6006 was no exception. It was capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 miles per hour and could pull heavy loads up steep gradients with ease. The engine's successor, the Castle Class, was based on the King Class design and became the backbone of the GWR's express passenger services. Today, No. 6006 is preserved at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway, where it is a popular attraction for steam enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Visitors can get up close and personal with this magnificent machine, learning about its history and the role it played in the development of railway technology. The engine's restoration is an ongoing project, with volunteers working tirelessly to bring it back to its former glory. This photograph captures the essence of No. 6006 King George I, a true icon of the steam age and a reminder of the ingenuity and passion that drove the railway industry forward.
