EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the Falkland Islands in 1970, offers a glimpse into the remarkable salvage operation of the iconic SS Great Britain. The image showcases a partial view of the ship's hull resting on a pontoon, with "Ulrich Harms" boldly inscribed on its side in the foreground. In the backdrop, we catch sight of a salvage vessel diligently working to bring this historic steamship back home to Bristol. The significance of this moment cannot be overstated. The SS Great Britain stands as an enduring testament to Isambard Kingdom Brunel's visionary engineering prowess and revolutionized maritime travel during her time. Now lying abandoned and weathered by time in distant waters, her retrieval became an arduous task that demanded expertise and determination. This photograph encapsulates both the enormity of the undertaking and hints at hope for restoration. It serves as a poignant reminder that even after years spent languishing far from her birthplace, there are those who refuse to let history fade away without putting up a fight.
