EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Sheffield City Archives takes us back to the bustling streets of Haymarket in 1937. From an elevated view, we are transported to a time when trams, buses, and cars shared the road with pedestrians navigating their way through the city center. The scene captures a moment where the flow of traffic is interrupted by people crossing the street. In this snapshot of history, our attention is drawn to several notable landmarks. On the left side stands Norfolk Market Hall, a hub of activity and commerce for locals seeking provisions and goods. Adjacent to it is No 32 Castle Street, home to Arthur Davy and Sons Ltd. , prominent provision merchants who played a significant role in serving the community's needs. The image encapsulates not only transportation but also showcases how cities were vibrant centers for trade and business during that era. The General Post Office offices can be seen further down Haymarket as another symbol of communication connecting people near and far. As we gaze upon this photograph print, we are reminded of how much has changed over time while appreciating the enduring spirit of urban life. It serves as both a historical document capturing daily life in Sheffield nearly a century ago and an invitation for us to reflect on our own experiences within modern cityscapes today.
