Vegas Valley leopard frog, artwork
Vegas Valley leopard frog (Rana fisheri), artwork. This frog, once found in Las Vegas Valley, USA, was thought to be extinct since the 1940s. However, in 2011 an analysis of the DNA of preserved specimens found them to be identical to the Chiricahua leopard frog (Rana chiricahuensis). This frog is found in several locations in Mexico and the USA, but is threatened and has been lost from much of its range. The loss from the Las Vegas Valley is now considered an example of extirpation (local extinction), rather than complete extinction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Vegas Valley leopard frog, an artwork that represents a fascinating tale of rediscovery and conservation. Once believed to be extinct since the 1940s in Las Vegas Valley, USA, this elusive amphibian made a surprising comeback in 2011. Through DNA analysis of preserved specimens, scientists discovered that these frogs were actually identical to the Chiricahua leopard frog found in various locations across Mexico and the USA. Sadly, despite its resurgence, the Chiricahua leopard frog remains threatened and has vanished from much of its original habitat range. The disappearance of this species from Las Vegas Valley serves as a stark example of extirpation or local extinction rather than complete extinction. Through this remarkable artwork captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the intricate beauty and fragility of nature's creations. This illustration not only celebrates the unique biology and zoology behind these North American frogs but also highlights their critical status as endangered creatures. Let us cherish this visual representation as a testament to our responsibility for preserving biodiversity and ensuring the survival of magnificent species like the Vegas Valley leopard frog. May it inspire us all to take action towards protecting our natural world for generations to come.
