Antique Framed Print : Slice of agate, a form of quartz
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Slice of agate, a form of quartz
Agate. Slice through a nodule of agate, a type of chalcedony. This is a cryptocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz (silicon oxide). At the heart of the agate are rock crystals, a clear, colourless form of quartz. Impurities within agate can give the mineral a wide range of colours distributed in concentric bands. The bands represent successive layers of quartz precipitated out of solution. This occurs inside the circular cavities of lava rocks, producing rounded nodules. Fine specimens of agate are found in Brazil, Italy, Uruguay and Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing slice of agate, a remarkable form of quartz. Agate is a type of chalcedony, which belongs to the cryptocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz (silicon oxide). At its core lie exquisite rock crystals, displaying a transparent and colorless beauty. However, what truly sets this mineral apart are the impurities within it that give rise to an astonishing array of colors arranged in concentric bands. Each band represents a distinct layer of quartz that has precipitated out of solution over time. This fascinating process occurs deep inside circular cavities found within lava rocks, resulting in the formation of rounded nodules. The fine specimens captured in this image hail from renowned locations such as Brazil, Italy, Uruguay, and Germany. The intricate patterns and vibrant hues showcased by agate make it an absolute marvel to behold. Its natural allure has captivated scientists and enthusiasts alike for centuries. As we gaze upon this stunning slice through an agate nodule, we are reminded once again of nature's incredible ability to create breathtaking works of art hidden beneath our feet.
