Antique Framed Print : Pollen of Marsh Woundwort flower
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Pollen of Marsh Woundwort flower
False colour scanning electron micrograph of pollen grains of a Marsh Woundwort. The outer walls (exine) have a netted ornamentation. When a pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of a flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out from the pollen grain, down through the stigma, to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down this tube, fertilize the ovules & a seed is formed. Magnification: X971 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Pollen of Marsh Woundwort flower. Through a false color scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a close-up view of the delicate pollen grains with their netted ornamentation on the outer walls. Pollen plays a vital role in plant reproduction, containing the male gametes necessary for fertilization. When a pollen grain lands on the stigma of a flower, it begins to germinate. From this tiny grain, a remarkable process unfolds as a pollen tube emerges and grows down through the stigma towards the ovary. Within this slender tube, male nuclei travel downwards to reach and fertilize the waiting ovules. This union between male and female reproductive cells results in seed formation – an essential step in ensuring future generations of plants. The magnification level employed for this image is truly astounding - X971 at 35mm size - allowing us to appreciate even more deeply nature's incredible intricacies. The vibrant colors used here serve not only to enhance our visual experience but also remind us that within these minuscule structures lies immense potential for life and growth. This photograph from Science Photo Library invites us into an unseen world where science meets artistry, offering insight into botany, plant reproduction, and specifically highlighting Marsh Woundwort as its subject matter.
