Parasitic fly, SEM Z340 / 0605

Parasitic fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fly Ornithomyia avicularia. This is a parasite of nesting birds, especially house martins and swallows. Two large compound eyes (red) dominate its head. The mouthparts, seen below the eyes, include sensory hairs. These hairs are also seen on the rest of the body. The legs are segmented, and end in claws and pads to grip surfaces. This fly is on a feather. On top of the flys head is a triangle of red dots. These are the ocelli, simple eyes that detect variations in light intensity. Magnification: x13 when printed 10cm wide
