Antique Framed Print : Optical fibres conducting light
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Optical fibres conducting light
Fibre optics. View of the connecting ends of two optical fibres which are conducting light. Optical fibres are made from flexible glass that has a high refractive index. Each fibre is then coated with an outer protective layer that has a low refractive index. The light beams that emerge from the end of each fibre (seen as a white dot on the guide at lower right) have been completely internally reflected. The light may thus travel along the entire cable with little or no absorption. Bundles of optical fibres may be used to carry images, or high volumes of data such as telephone conversations

14"x12" (36x31cm) Antique Frame
Bevelled wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 archival quality photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, the Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: To minimise original artwork cropping, for optimum layout, and to ensure print is secure, the visible print may be marginally smaller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of optical fibres conducting light. The image offers a close-up view of the connecting ends of two optical fibres, which are delicately transmitting beams of light. Crafted from flexible glass with a high refractive index, these fibres are coated with an outer protective layer boasting a low refractive index. The mesmerizing result is evident as white dots emerge from the end of each fibre, representing completely internally reflected light beams. This phenomenon allows for seamless travel along the entire cable with minimal absorption. It's fascinating to witness how this technology enables efficient communication and data transmission. Optical fibres have revolutionized modern communications by enabling the transportation of images and high volumes of data such as telephone conversations. Their remarkable capabilities make them indispensable in our interconnected world. In this photograph captured by Science Photo Library, we can appreciate both the scientific ingenuity behind fibre optics and their aesthetic appeal. The vibrant play of light against dark backgrounds creates an ethereal atmosphere that highlights the elegance and sophistication inherent in this cutting-edge technology. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of its technical significance but also its artistic allure – proof that science can be visually stunning too.
