Manned maneuvring unit space walk, 1984

Manned maneuvring unit space walk, 1984. Astronaut Bruce McCandless floats free above the Earth in his manned manoeuvring unit (MMU) on 7th February 1984, during the 10th space shuttle flight (mission 41B). McCandless, who helped design the MMU, was the first person to fly it, thus becoming the first " human satellite" in orbit around the Earth. The MMU is propelled by small nitrogen thrusters which are controlled by the astronauts hands. Because no umbilical cord attaches the astronaut to the spacecraft, it gives much greater mobility than was available to earlier spacewalkers. Mission 41B was launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on 3rd February 1984, and landed back at KSC on 12th February

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a groundbreaking moment in space exploration history. Taken during the 10th space shuttle flight, mission 41B, on February 7th, 1984, it showcases astronaut Bruce McCandless floating freely above the Earth in his manned manoeuvring unit (MMU). Designed by McCandless himself, this innovative technology allowed him to become the first "human satellite" orbiting our planet. The MMU propelled by small nitrogen thrusters controlled by the astronaut's hands provided unparalleled mobility compared to previous spacewalks. What sets this image apart is that there is no umbilical cord connecting McCandless to the spacecraft. This newfound freedom enabled him to navigate through outer space with remarkable ease and grace. As an American pioneer venturing into uncharted territory, McCandless symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond Earth's boundaries. His historic feat not only pushed technological boundaries but also expanded our understanding of what humans are capable of achieving. Mission 41B was launched from Kennedy Space Center on February 3rd, 1984 and safely returned on February 12th. This photograph serves as a testament to mankind's ingenuity and determination as we continue striving for new frontiers in space travel. It stands as a reminder that even amidst vast darkness, human innovation can illuminate our path towards discovery and inspire generations to come.
