Leaning Tower of Pisa repairs
Leaning Tower of Pisa preservation. Drilling equipment (lower left) removing soil from beneath the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy to correct its increasing lean. The Tower was constructed in the 12th Century as the bell tower of an adjacent cathedral (not seen). However the ground on which it was built is subject to subsidence, and the Tower began leaning from the time it was built. In 1990 it was declared unsafe, and major projects aimed at halting its lean were implemented. Lead weights were attached to the side opposite the lean to balance its weight, and cabling was attached to prevent a fall. The soil removal was started in 1998. Photographed in July 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the meticulous preservation efforts undertaken to correct the increasing lean of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. Built in the 12th Century as a bell tower for an adjacent cathedral, this architectural marvel has been battling subsidence issues since its inception. In 1990, due to safety concerns, extensive projects were initiated to halt its perilous tilt. In this image taken in July 2000, drilling equipment can be seen diligently removing soil from beneath the tower's foundation. This strategic maneuver aimed to rectify its precarious lean and restore stability. To counterbalance the weight distribution, lead weights were attached on one side opposite to the inclination while cables were meticulously fastened to prevent any potential collapse. The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands as a testament not only to human ingenuity but also engineering prowess. Its ongoing renovation showcases mankind's unwavering dedication towards preserving historical treasures for future generations. As tourists flock from all corners of the globe to witness this extraordinary sight firsthand, it serves as a reminder that even seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome with determination and innovation. The Leaning Tower of Pisa continues to captivate visitors with its unique charm and remains an enduring symbol of resilience amidst adversity.
