EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, depicting a scene of men engaged in the ancient art of hunting bison. The artwork, created by French explorer and writer Andre Thevet, showcases these skilled hunters pursuing buttol horned animals that bear resemblance to wild ox or possibly bison. The woodcut is extracted from Chapter II of Book XXIII in Thevet's renowned work, Cosmographie universelle (1575). This extensive book delves into the history and geography of the lands explored by Thevet himself. With over 1000 pages divided into 23 books, it offers a comprehensive insight into various aspects of different regions. In this particular illustration, we witness European male hunters employing their weapons with precision and determination as they confront their formidable prey. Armed with spears and bows and arrows, these men navigate the untamed wilderness of Florida during that era. The image not only provides an intriguing glimpse into historical hunting practices but also sheds light on North America's rich fauna during this time period. It serves as a testament to human adaptability and survival skills in an environment where predator-prey dynamics played a crucial role. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this monochromatic woodcut artwork from Science Photo Library, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details while immersing ourselves in the fascinating world depicted within it.
