Hoary marmot
Hoary marmot (Marmota caligata). This rodent is found in alpine and sub-alpine regions in North America north of Idaho and Washington. Mainly herbivorous, it feeds on the leaves, blossoms and seeds of plants. When food is plentiful it lives in loose social groups, consisting of one dominant male, several females and their offspring and a few subordinate males. However, when food is scarce, it lives in pairs, as the male must extend his range and cannot defend more than one female from invaders. Photographed in Garibaldi, British Columbia, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Hoary marmot, a remarkable rodent species found in the alpine and sub-alpine regions of North America. With its striking appearance and fascinating behavior, this creature truly captures the essence of wild life in Canada. The Hoary marmot is primarily herbivorous, indulging in a diet consisting of leaves, blossoms, and seeds from various plants. When food is abundant, these marmots form loose social groups that include one dominant male, multiple females with their offspring, and a few subordinate males. However, when resources become scarce, they adapt by living in pairs as the male must expand his territory to find sustenance while protecting only one female from potential invaders. Photographed against the breathtaking backdrop of Garibaldi in British Columbia's picturesque landscape, this image encapsulates the beauty of Canadian nature at its finest. The intricate details captured by Science Photo Library allow us to appreciate not only the physical features but also the behavioral patterns exhibited by these incredible creatures. With its relevance to zoology and mammalian studies alike, this photograph serves as a valuable resource for scientific exploration. It offers insights into how animals adapt to changing environments and provides an opportunity for further research on alpine ecosystems within North America.
