Hernando Cortez, Spanish explorer

Hernando Cortez (1485-1547), the conqueror of the Aztec empire in Mexico. After fighting in the conquest of Cuba, Cortez was given command of an expedition to Mexico. He then marched inland into Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire ruled by Montezuma II. After an initially friendly welcome, Cortez was driven out of the city. He gathered more men and, in 1521, razed Tenochtitlan to the ground, building Mexico City on its ruins. For this and the riches he sent back to Spain, Cortez was appointed governor of New Spain, but, fearing his ambition, this title was taken away from him in 1528

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Hernando Cortez, a renowned Spanish explorer from the 16th century. Cortez is famously known as the conqueror of the Aztec empire in Mexico. After his involvement in the conquest of Cuba, he was entrusted with leading an expedition to Mexico. With determination and bravery, Cortez marched inland towards Tenochtitlan, which served as the capital of the Aztec empire under Montezuma II's rule. Initially greeted with warmth and hospitality, Cortez soon faced opposition that forced him out of the city. Undeterred by this setback, he regrouped and returned in 1521 to lay waste to Tenochtitlan completely. From its ruins emerged Mexico City, a testament to his triumph over one civilization and birthplace for another. Cortez's exploits were not without controversy; despite his successes and immense wealth brought back to Spain, his ambition led to him being stripped of his governorship title in New Spain by those who feared him. This remarkable illustration captures Hernando Cortez at a pivotal moment in history—a man driven by exploration and conquest during an era marked by European expansionism. His legacy remains etched into our collective memory as we reflect on this extraordinary chapter in human history.
