Dwarf planets
Dwarf planets. Three dwarf planets in a row showing their comparative sizes. From left to right: Ceres, Pluto, and Eris. Pluto, a Kuiper object, was demoted to the status of dwarf planet in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reviewed its status in light of the recently discovered Eris, also a Kuiper object. Eris was discovered in 2003 and is now the largest of the known dwarf planets. At the same time Pluto suffered its demotion, the object Ceres was promoted from asteroid to dwarf planet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three dwarf planets lined up in a row, allowing us to compare their sizes and appreciate the diversity within our solar system. From left to right, we have Ceres, Pluto, and Eris, each with its own intriguing story. Pluto's journey from being considered the ninth planet to a dwarf planet is well-known. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) made this decision after discovering Eris, which also resides in the Kuiper Belt alongside Pluto. This region of icy objects beyond Neptune has revealed many secrets about our cosmic neighborhood. Eris takes center stage as the largest known dwarf planet since its discovery in 2003. Its presence played a significant role in reevaluating Pluto's status within our planetary family. Meanwhile, Ceres experienced an opposite fate during this review process - it was promoted from an asteroid to a dwarf planet. Set against a striking black background that enhances their celestial beauty, these cut-out images capture the essence of astronomical wonderment. As we gaze upon these celestial bodies suspended on paper, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity about space and our ongoing quest for knowledge. This stunning photograph not only highlights scientific achievements but also serves as a reminder that there is still so much more waiting to be discovered beyond what meets the eye.
