Antique Framed Print : Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph
Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus on woven household fabric. This mite has eight legs, with the head at lower left. It has an unsegmented, rounded body. Its mouthparts are adapted to feeding on the dead scales of human skin found in household dust. Dust mites are relatives of spiders and scorpions. They are smaller than a full stop and therefore invisible to the naked eye. Millions of dust mites live inside furniture and on fabric in the average home. The dead bodies and excrement of dust mites can cause humans to suffer allergic reactions. Magnification: x131 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a dust mite, a minuscule creature that resides in our homes without us even knowing. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are given an up-close look at the house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, as it rests on woven household fabric. With its eight legs and rounded body, this tiny arachnid is barely visible to the naked eye, measuring smaller than a full stop. However, despite their size, millions of these elusive creatures can be found living inside furniture and on various fabrics within an average home. While they may seem harmless at first glance, dust mites pose potential health risks to humans. Their mouthparts are specially adapted for feeding on dead skin scales found in household dust. The dead bodies and excrement left behind by these microscopic creatures can trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. As relatives of spiders and scorpions, dust mites belong to the fascinating world of invertebrates. This SEM image magnified 131 times at a 5x7cm size allows us to appreciate their delicate features while shedding light on the hidden wildlife that coexists with us indoors. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder that even within our seemingly ordinary surroundings lie extraordinary wonders waiting to be discovered.
