A chimera, a mixture of goat and sheep

Sheep/goat chimera. Chimera or chimaera, a creature that contains a mixture of genetically- different tissues, in this case those of a sheep and a goat. A chimera is created by mixing togeth- er the cells from separate embryos, and then impl- anting them into a surrogate mother. The composite nature of this chimera can be seen as areas of thin white goat fur, and thick grey sheep wool. A chimera has a composite nature because the embryo cells were only physically mixed together; no genetic material was transferred between them. Its sex cells also developed from either one embryo or the other, meaning that its offspring will be " pure breeds", not another chimera

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a remarkable chimera, an extraordinary creature that embodies the genetic fusion of a goat and a sheep. Through the intricate process of mixing cells from separate embryos and implanting them into a surrogate mother, this unique being has come to life. The composite nature of the chimera is visually striking, with areas adorned in thin white goat fur contrasting against thick grey sheep wool. What makes this chimera even more fascinating is that its composite nature stems solely from physical cell mixing; no genetic material was transferred between the two embryos. Consequently, its sex cells have developed exclusively from either the goat or sheep embryo, ensuring that any offspring it produces will be "pure breeds" rather than another chimera. This awe-inspiring image not only highlights the wonders of animal engineering but also underscores groundbreaking research in genetics and bioengineering. It serves as a testament to mankind's ability to manipulate biological processes through advanced biotechnology techniques. Captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph invites us into the realm of transgenic creatures and prompts contemplation on our ever-evolving understanding of genetics. It reminds us that science continues to push boundaries and unravel mysteries hidden within nature's complex tapestry.
