EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s in St Just in Penwith Churchtown, Cornwall. The focal point of the image is a row of charming Coastguard cottages, standing proudly against the picturesque backdrop of this coastal town. What catches our attention immediately is the White Ensign flying high on a flagpole at the New Downs end of the town. This iconic flag represents not only a symbol of national pride but also signifies the presence and authority of serving Royal Navy warships, ships boats, Royal Marines craft, naval bases, and establishments both at home and overseas. The Coast Guard, later known as Coastguard, played an integral role within the Admiralty between 1856 and 1923. Their duty was to safeguard these shores from any potential threats or emergencies that may arise from sea. Though we are unaware of who captured this remarkable moment frozen in time, it serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich maritime heritage. It reminds us how vital these brave men were in protecting our coastlines during times when naval power reigned supreme. As we gaze upon this historic photograph print displayed at the Royal Cornwall Museum, we can't help but feel grateful for those who dedicated their lives to ensure our safety by land and by sea.
