EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the charming village of Polperro in Cornwall during the late 19th century. The image captures a picturesque scene of houses nestled on the hillside, overlooking the serene beauty of this coastal town. The photographer, Lewis Harding, skillfully frames the composition to showcase not only the architectural splendor but also the lively atmosphere that permeates through its streets. Intriguingly, amidst this idyllic setting, we catch a glimpse of children joyfully playing in an area known as The Warren. Their laughter and playful antics add a touch of innocence and vitality to this historic snapshot. It is fascinating to imagine these young ones growing up against such a breathtaking backdrop. The photograph itself holds historical significance as it originates from Thomas Q. Couch's manuscript "The History of Polperro" published in 1878. Couch's work expanded upon Jonathan Couch's earlier publication from 1871 with further insights into this remarkable village's past. As we examine this image closely, we are drawn not only to its visual appeal but also to details such as clothing and costume that provide glimpses into daily life during that era. Each element within this print tells a story about Cornish culture and heritage. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum, this extraordinary piece allows us to appreciate both the artistic talent behind capturing such moments and offers us an invaluable window into Polperro's rich history for generations to come.
