EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the timeless beauty of Cornwall's coastal charm, this vintage print transports us back to a serene summer day on June 24th, 1910. The lens of photographer Herbert Hughes skillfully frames a general view over the picturesque River Gannel in Newquay. The estuary glistens under the warm sunlight as it gracefully merges with the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. In this scene, our gaze is drawn towards the middle distance where stands the majestic Corisande Hotel. A true gem nestled amidst nature's splendor, its grandeur perfectly complements the surrounding coastal landscape. As we immerse ourselves in this snapshot from over a century ago, we can almost feel the gentle breeze and hear echoes of laughter drifting from hotel guests enjoying their seaside retreat. The photographers themselves become part of this historical tableau as they occupy pride of place in the foreground. Their presence reminds us that even then, capturing moments through photography was an art form cherished by many. This remarkable image encapsulates not only an appreciation for Cornwall's natural wonders but also serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with preserving memories through visual storytelling. It invites us to reflect upon how time may change landscapes and societies but cannot diminish our desire to capture fleeting moments that hold deep meaning for generations to come.
