EDITORS COMMENTS
Transported back in time to the picturesque East Looe Quay, this print captures the essence of a bustling fishing village in Cornwall during the 1930s. Standing proudly on the quayside is Edward Middleton's van, adorned with vibrant signage indicating his trade as a Fish and Ice Merchant. The van serves as a symbol of livelihood for this coastal community, where fresh catches from the sea were brought ashore and distributed to locals. In this snapshot of daily life, we witness a man strolling along with three children by his side, while tenderly carrying another child in his arms. This heartwarming scene showcases the importance placed on family bonds amidst their industrious lifestyle. Further ahead, another figure can be seen fading into the distance – perhaps an eager fisherman or resident going about their day. The photographer behind this timeless image is S. C. Fox, who skillfully captured not only the charm of East Looe Quay but also its close connection to nature. The river estuary glistens under sunlight, reflecting both boats and buildings alike. It serves as a reminder that these South Coast fishing villages and towns owe much of their existence to the bountiful waters that surround them. This remarkable print from Royal Cornwall Museum transports us back to an era when Cornish communities thrived on maritime trades like fishing and trading at quaysides like East Looe Quay.
