EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Royal Cornwall Museum takes us back in time to the 8th of August, 1911. The image showcases a surface view of Saras or New shaft at Wheal Kitty Mine in St Agnes, Cornwall. With its remarkable clarity and attention to detail, we are transported into the heart of this historic mining site. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly the impressive engine house that stands tall against the rugged Cornish landscape. Its sturdy structure exudes strength and resilience, serving as a testament to the determination and hard work of those who labored within its walls. Adjacent to it, we can see an intricate headgear system that once facilitated transportation deep underground. The raised tramway with wagons adds another layer of intrigue to this snapshot from history. It hints at a bustling network that connected various parts of the mine, carrying precious minerals and materials along its tracks. Photographer Arthur William Jordan has masterfully captured both the grandeur and intricacy present in this scene. His keen eye for composition allows us to appreciate not only the industrial elements but also how they harmoniously coexist with nature's beauty surrounding them. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are reminded of Cornwall's rich mining heritage - a legacy built on sweat, perseverance, and innovation. It serves as a poignant reminder of our past while honoring those who shaped it without mentioning any commercial use or specific company involved in these endeavors
