EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in aviation history. The image showcases the Westland Whirlwind HAR. 10 prototype, accompanied by the Westland Whirlwind HAS. 7 of 848 Squadron from HMS Bulwark, amidst a snowy landscape at Worthy Down in December 1959. What makes this scene even more remarkable is the presence of Royal Marine Commandos, adding an element of strength and power to the composition. The photograph beautifully portrays the postwar era of the Fleet Air Arm, showcasing their prowess in helicopter technology. The sleek design and powerful rotors of these aircraft are evident as they stand tall against the wintry backdrop. One can almost feel the biting cold air as it whips around these magnificent machines. Incorporating both airborne forces and royal marines into one frame symbolizes unity and collaboration between different branches of military service during that time period. It serves as a reminder of their shared commitment to protect and serve their nation. Charles E Brown's expert photography skills have truly brought this historical moment to life through his lens. This print not only preserves a significant event but also offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the technological advancements achieved by RAF during this era. Displayed at Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum, this image stands as a testament to human ingenuity, bravery, and dedication exhibited by those who served in airborne forces during that time period
