Monarch butterflies fly at the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary in Michoacan

Monarch butterflies fly at the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary on a mountain in the Mexican state of Michoacan November 27, 2013. Monarch butterflies have started arriving at a butterfly sanctuary in the central Mexican state of Michoacan - an annual spectacle that draws tourists, scientists and locals alike, but not in the arrival numbers expected. Biologist Felipe Martinez, Sub-Director of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, said the arrival has been delayed due to several cold fronts hitting Mexico and continued rain storms. In 2000, Mexico established a 56, 000 hectare reserve for the butterflies in Michoacan and part of the State of Mexico, containing some 6.7 million trees. Picture taken November 27, 2013. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of Monarch butterflies gracefully soaring through the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary in Michoacan, Mexico. Taken on November 27,2013, this image showcases the annual phenomenon that attracts tourists, scientists, and locals alike. However, contrary to expectations, the arrival numbers of these majestic creatures have been lower than anticipated. Biologist Felipe Martinez explains that this delay is a result of multiple cold fronts and persistent rainstorms that have hit Mexico. Despite these challenges, the resilience of these delicate insects shines through as they continue their journey to reach their winter haven. In an effort to protect and preserve this natural wonder, Mexico established a vast reserve spanning over 56,000 hectares in Michoacan and part of the State of Mexico. This sanctuary boasts an impressive count of approximately 6.7 million trees – providing crucial habitat for millions of Monarchs during their migration. The photographer Edgard Garrido skillfully captures this awe-inspiring scene with his lens. The vibrant orange hues of countless Monarch butterflies fluttering against a backdrop of lush greenery create a truly breathtaking spectacle. This photograph serves as a reminder not only of nature's beauty but also its vulnerability. It encourages us to appreciate and safeguard our environment so that future generations can witness such extraordinary sights firsthand.
