EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic moment of Napoleon Leaving the Field of Waterloo on the fateful day of June 18th, 1815. Painted by George Jones in the 19th century, this oil masterpiece portrays a scene filled with intense emotions and historical significance. The vast field stretches before us, adorned with soldiers and troops engaged in warfare. The mountainous backdrop adds an air of grandeur to the setting while stormy clouds loom overhead, foreshadowing the impending chaos. The landscape is cloaked in shades of grey, mirroring both the somber mood and smoggy atmosphere that engulfed that monumental day. At its center stands Napoleon himself, mounted on his horse as he prepares to leave behind a battlefield marked by rain-soaked grounds. His figure exudes determination despite defeat, symbolizing resilience amidst adversity. Surrounding him are weary soldiers who fought valiantly under his command. George Jones skillfully captures this historic event through meticulous brushstrokes and attention to detail. This painting serves as a poignant reminder of one man's quest for power and conquest coming face-to-face with destiny at Waterloo. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of art from Nottingham City Photos collection, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in history – a battle lost but forever etched into our collective memory.
