EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the 1880s, capturing a powerful moment in American history. In this hand-colored woodcut by Frederic Remington, we witness an African-American buffalo soldier astride a spirited horse, freshly tamed from the wild herd. The image exudes strength and resilience as the rider confidently navigates the untamed West. Remington's illustration beautifully depicts the traditional attire of this historic figure, showcasing his military uniform and evoking a sense of honor and duty. As one of America's frontier soldiers, this brave individual represents not only their own story but also that of countless others who served on horseback during this era. The vast plains of North America serve as an awe-inspiring backdrop for this scene, emphasizing both the beauty and challenges faced by those who ventured into these uncharted territories.
