Bridge Number 10 on the LNWR Oxford Branch - A Timeless Engineering Marvel

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, we find ourselves standing before Bridge Number 10 on the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Oxford Branch. This elegant structure, a testament to the ingenuity of Victorian engineering, spans the picturesque Thames at Iffley, Oxfordshire, England. The LNWR Oxford Branch, also known as the "Iffley Branch," was opened in 1854, connecting Oxford with the mainline railway network at Cowley. This branch line played a crucial role in the transportation of goods and passengers between Oxford and the rest of the country. Bridge Number 10, a masonry arch bridge, is a significant component of this historic railway line. Its graceful arches, crafted from red brick and stone, have weathered the test of time, standing proud against the backdrop of the Thames. The bridge's design is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, with the arches mirroring the gentle curves of the river. The photograph captures the bridge in its tranquil, natural setting, with the Thames flowing calmly beneath it. The verdant foliage of the surrounding trees and the lush greenery of the riverbank add to the idyllic scene. The absence of modern structures and trains in the photograph transports us back to a bygone era, allowing us to appreciate the bridge in its original context. Bridge Number 10 on the LNWR Oxford Branch is not just a railway structure; it is a piece of history. It stands as a reminder of the engineering prowess of the past and the beauty of the natural world that surrounds us. This photograph is a tribute to the enduring legacy of the LNWR Oxford Branch and the engineering marvels that continue to inspire us today.
